Baumgartner + Uriu is a full-service architecture firm headquartered in Los Angeles, CA, that has worked on projects both nationwide and abroad. Architects Herwig Baumgartner and Scott Uriu, each partners with over 20 years of professional experience, established the firm in 2006. Their projects encompass a wide range of scales and purposes, from restaurants to concert halls to master planning and urban design.
Baumgartner + Uriu’s mission is to consistently push the boundaries of architecture and urban design. Innovation, technology, and sustainability are the three central concerns of their firm. For Baumgartner and Uriu, an early education in music combined with architecture has led them to experiment with concepts and techniques in fields such as music, science, and computation. They combine the realities of design and construction with the theoretical and experimental potential of contemporary composition and digital media. Baumgartner and Uriu have developed analytic and generative software that has allowed them to implement their theoretical work into three-dimensional form. They are on a continuous mission to research and experiment with new building materials and construction techniques using 3D technology and manufacturing techniques from outside the architectural profession.
Two of Baumgartner + Uriu’s projects were exhibited in the Austrian Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale. Their work has been displayed in the Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles and the Milan Stadtkrone 2030 Exhibition in Milan, Italy, among many other museums and exhibitions. Baumgartner + Uriu have also been widely published in periodicals such as Architectural Record and the Los Angeles Times. In 2010, Baumgartner + Uriu published their first monograph, titled Vectorfields, and were awarded the 2010 Maxine Frankel Award for design research.
Baumgartner was born in Austria and holds a diploma in music and new media from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and a master in architecture from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Uriu was born in Davis, CA, and studied at the University of California, Davis. He received a bachelor of architecture from California State Polytechnic Pomona, as well as studying at the Architectural Association in London. Baumgartner and Uriu both worked at Gehry Partners before founding Baumgartner + Uriu in 2006, and both remain active academically as faculty at Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCIARC) as well as lecturing widely.
