Landmark Columbus’ most visible impact is found in Exhibit Columbus: our annual exploration of architecture, art, design, and community, which alternates programming between symposium and exhibition years, and features the J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize Competition.

Columbus, Ind. Renews Its Big Design Legacy

By Ted Loos in New York Times

"It has an unusual depth of remarkable modern, postmodern and contemporary architecture, making it one of America’s most design-sophisticated communities...But the most iconic structures were constructed decades ago, and so the town, with a “let’s put on a show” spirit, has decided to breathe new life into the local legacy."

Columbus, Indiana…Don’t call it a comeback

By Matt Shaw in The Architects Newspaper

"So what is the impact of Exhibit Columbus and its continuation? For the locals, it is about education and a re-engagement with the design heritage and legacy. But the exhibition can’t escape being relevant globally, and it has much to offer as a living, urban laboratory."

Exhibit Columbus: A New Era of Celebrating Design

By Amanda Dameron in Dwell

"We are at our best when we collaborate; communities thrive when citizens share a commitment to the future. This is perfectly illustrated in Columbus, Indiana, the site of many an architecture student’s pilgrimage. Here, a family’s dedication to modern design led to a rich, and arguably unmatched, urban tapestry."

Exhibit Columbus: A midwest town reasserts its modern architectural heritage

By Patrick Sisson in Curbed

"Still, amid the small town charm and rows of Victorian buildings, Columbus is as much about the bold future as the warmly nostalgic past. Just look up at the architecture. Thanks to the patronage of J. Irwin Miller, the area’s midcentury industrial titan, this small city of 46,000 boasts more modern architectural marvels per capita than just about anywhere else in the country, and perhaps the world."

Why Columbus, Indiana Matters

By David Sokol

"Yet a trove of avant-garde architecture—seven National Historic Landmarks from the mid-20th century and many more buildings that exemplify design since then—suggests that the city, population 45,000, prefers to look forward. When it opens in August, the design initiative Exhibit Columbus—in its second year, comprising 15 installations throughout downtown—will underscore this pairing of heartland and modernism."

A MEETING OF MODERN MINDS
Exhibit Columbus National Symposium embraces progressive preservation

By Elizabeth Blasius

"The sense of progressive preservation at Exhibit Columbus was refreshingly unburdened by the lack of old-school historic preservation and architectural history thought chains, and discussion instead focused on innovation, creativity, and participation over historical facts delivered by academics."

Indiana’s Exhibit Columbus festival promises to celebrate women in architecture

By Eva Hagberg Fisher

"While the first exhibition, held last year, was successful on its own terms, the leadership found themselves asking what else they could do. They wanted to highlight the process of community collaboration, the way in which everyone in the city seems to be equally invested in making the city better, and came up with five modes of investment: affordable housing, civic structures, educational facilities, parks, and healthcare & wellness. Each prize winner, in their own way, addresses one or more of these five avenues."

New Composite Building Materials Are Redefining Modernism at Exhibit Columbus

By Zach Mortice

"Both Battaglia and Prado’s experiments in Columbus point to a future where greater formal freedom is granted to materials, one where these broadened horizons are used to express both functional structure and aesthetic surface. When merging structure and surface, it’s possible to also envision merging their respective purposes (function and aesthetics)—another long-standing dream of the modernist pioneers in Columbus and worldwide."

Exhibit Columbus design interventions will highlight—and reimagine—city’s landmark sites

By Liz Stinson

"For this year’s Exhibit Columbus, the five winners of the prize designed installations that will pop up around some of Columbus’s most famed buildings and landmark sites. The firms—Frida Escobedo Studio, Bryony Roberts Studio, Agency Landscape + Planning, and Curbed Groundbreakers honorees MASS Design Group and SO-IL—were asked to draw on the town’s history of using design to create community. The resulting designs cleverly interact with existing architecture while playing with the idea of public space."
